Patrick Hillery was the sixth President of Ireland, serving from 1976 to 1990. He was a member of the Fianna Fáil party and had previously served as Minister for Foreign Affairs, Minister for Industry and Commerce, and Minister for Defence. Hillery was a popular president and is credited with helping to improve relations between Ireland and Northern Ireland.
