Patrick Victor Martindale White (1912-1990) was an Australian novelist and playwright who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1973. He was born in London to Australian parents and moved to Australia with his family in 1913. He studied at the University of Sydney and worked as a journalist and radio broadcaster before becoming a full-time writer in 1945.
