Patrick White was born in London, England on 28 May 1912. His father, Thomas White, was an English businessman, and his mother, Ruth Herbert, was an Australian. White spent his early childhood in London and Sydney, and he moved to England permanently in 1926. He studied at the University of Cambridge, where he earned a degree in English literature. White returned to Australia in 1935 and began his writing career.
