Paul-Henri Spaak retired from Belgian politics in 1966. He had been involved in Belgian politics since the early 1920s, and had served as Prime Minister of Belgium from 1938 to 1939 and from 1946 to 1947. He was also a key figure in the development of the European Union, and served as the first President of the European Parliament from 1958 to 1961.
