Hindemith spent much of his later years conducting and recording much of his own music in the United States. In 1940, he emigrated to the United States from Germany and became an American citizen in 1946. He taught at Yale University and Princeton University, and he was the conductor of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra from 1954 to 1967.
