Tillich was a Lutheran theologian. He was ordained as a Lutheran minister and served as a pastor in Germany before coming to the United States. He was a professor of theology at Union Theological Seminary in New York City from 1933 to 1962. Tillich's theology is often described as "neo-orthodox," and he is considered to be one of the most important theologians of the 20th century.
