Answer
After graduating from Amherst College in 1930, Murray applied to several law schools but was denied admission due to his race. He then filed a lawsuit against the University of Maryland Law School, arguing that the school's discriminatory admissions policy violated the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. The case, Murray v. Pearson, went all the way to the Supreme Court, which ruled in Murray's favor in 1936.
