Pauli Murray was the first African American to receive a Doctor of Juridical Science degree from Yale Law School. She was born in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1910, and she attended Howard University Law School, where she was the only African American woman in her class. After graduating from Howard, Murray worked as a lawyer in New York City, and she was involved in the civil rights movement.
