Pearl S. Buck lived in Nanjing for 18 years with her first husband, John Lossing Buck. The couple moved to Nanjing in 1917 and lived there until 1935, when they were forced to flee the Japanese invasion. During their time in Nanjing, Buck wrote many of her best-known works, including The Good Earth, which won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1932.
