Pearl S. Buck won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1938 for her "rich and truly epic descriptions of peasant life in China". She was the first American woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, and she is still the only American woman to have won the prize twice (she also won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1932).
