Pearl S. Buck spent most of her life before 1934 in Zhenjiang, China. She was born in 1892 in West Virginia, but her parents moved to China when she was young. She spent her childhood in Zhenjiang and learned to speak Chinese fluently. She also learned about Chinese culture and customs. Buck's experiences in China influenced her writing and she wrote many novels about Chinese life.
