Pearl S. Buck was born in Hillsboro, West Virginia, on June 26, 1892. She was the daughter of missionaries and spent her early years in China. She returned to the United States to attend college and later became a writer. She won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1938 for her novel "The Good Earth."
