Pedro Calderón de la Barca was a soldier as well as a playwright. He joined the Spanish army at age 19 and served in Flanders, where he witnessed the Battle of Nieuwpoort. He also served in Italy, where he was captured by the French and held prisoner for a time. After his release, he returned to Spain and continued his military career, rising to the rank of colonel.
