In early 1825, the southern province of Cisplatina rebelled against the Brazilian Empire. This was due to a number of factors, including the province's desire for greater autonomy, its resentment of Brazilian rule, and its economic interests. The rebellion was ultimately successful, and Cisplatina became an independent country, known as Uruguay.
