Pedro I was the son of John VI of Portugal. He was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1798 and ascended to the throne of Brazil in 1822. He was a strong supporter of independence for Brazil and led the country to victory in the War of Independence. In 1831, he abdicated the throne in favor of his son, Pedro II.
