Pedro II of Brazil was the 2nd and final Emperor of Brazil, reigning from 1831 until the country was overthrown in 1889. He was the son of Emperor Pedro I and Empress Maria Leopoldina. Pedro II was a very popular monarch and is often credited with helping to modernize Brazil. He was also a great patron of the arts and sciences. After his death, Brazil became a republic.
