Peggy Whitson is an American chemist and former NASA astronaut who has spent a total of 665 days in space. She is the first woman to command the International Space Station twice and has the most accumulated time in space of any American woman. Whitson is a biochemistry researcher and holds a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Rice University. She was also a professor at Rice University before joining NASA.
