Peggy Whitson first commanded the International Space Station (ISS) in 2007. She was the second female commander of the ISS and the first American woman to do so. Whitson served as commander of the ISS for four months during Expedition 16. During her time as commander, she conducted several spacewalks and performed a variety of experiments.
