14 years after Lowell’s death, Pluto was discovered by Clyde Tombaugh in 1930. Pluto was then considered to be the ninth planet from the sun. However, in 2006 the International Astronomical Union demoted Pluto to a dwarf planet, as it is now believed that there are many other objects in the Kuiper Belt, which is a ring of icy objects beyond Neptune.
