Answer
Rancho Petaluma, a vast land grant, originally encompassed the area that later became the city of Petaluma. This grant was awarded to Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo in 1834 by the Mexican government. Petaluma remained a part of Rancho Petaluma until 1850, when California became a state and the land grant system was abolished.
