Gordon Cooper was a NASA astronaut and test pilot who became the third American to orbit the Earth in 1962. He shared the command pilot duties on the Gemini 5 flight with Pete Conrad, and the two men became the first astronauts to perform extravehicular activity, or spacewalks. Cooper retired from NASA in 1970 and became a businessman and public speaker.
