Peter Abelard, a medieval philosopher and theologian, is considered to be a key forerunner in autobiographical work along with Augustine of Hippo. Abelard wrote an autobiographical work called The History of My Calamities in which he recounted his life story, including his love affair with Heloise and his involvement in a conflict with St. Bernard of Clairvaux.
