Sir Frank Macfarlane Burnet was an Australian medical scientist who, in 1959, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his contributions to immunology. He is best known for his work on acquired immunological tolerance, which he predicted in 1949. Acquired immunological tolerance is the ability of the immune system to distinguish between self and non-self, and to not attack self-antigens.
