Gaius Petronius Arbiter was born in AD 27 in Umbria, Italy. He was a writer, poet, and satirist. He is best known for his novel Satyricon, which is a satirical and bawdy account of the lives of Roman aristocrats. Petronius was also a close friend of the emperor Nero. In AD 65, he was accused of conspiracy against Nero and committed suicide.
