Philip and his wife, Mary, were reinstated by the Catholic Church in 1574 after their repentance. They had been excommunicated in 1559 for their support of the Protestant Reformation. Their repentance was a public act, in which they confessed their sins and asked for forgiveness. They were also required to make a donation to the Church.
