Philip III of France was born in 1245 and became king in 1270 after his father, Louis IX, died during the Eighth Crusade. He was a weak and indecisive ruler who was unable to prevent the French nobility from becoming increasingly powerful. He died in 1285 and was succeeded by his son, Philip IV.
