Philip III of France supported his uncle, Charles of Anjou, in his Crusade to take over the Kingdom of Naples. Charles had been invited to Naples by the pope to depose its king, who had been excommunicated. Philip agreed to help Charles with his Crusade in exchange for Charles's support in Philip's own plans to conquer Flanders.
