Philip of Schwaben was the first German king to be assassinated during his reign. He was the son of Frederick I Barbarossa, the Holy Roman Emperor, and became king in 1198. In 1208, he was assassinated by Otto of Wittelsbach, a powerful German nobleman. Otto had been opposed to Philip's reign, and he believed that Philip had been responsible for the death of his brother, Henry the Lion.
