The reformer Philipp Schwartzerdt, later known as Philip Melanchthon, was born in 1497 in Bretten, Germany. His father was a skilled armorer, originally from Bretten, and his mother was a daughter of the mayor. Melanchthon is considered one of the most influential figures of the Protestant Reformation and a close collaborator of Martin Luther.
