Scheidemann sought asylum in Denmark after leaving Germany in 1919 because he feared for his life after the collapse of the German Empire. He was one of the leaders of the German Social Democratic Party and had played a key role in the overthrow of the monarchy. He had also been a vocal critic of the war and had been imprisoned for his opposition to it.
