Phillis Wheatley was born in West Africa, during the 1750s, the exact year and place are unknown. Born into a life of slavery, Wheatley was taken to North America in 1761, arriving at the port in Boston, Massachusetts. She displayed a remarkable aptitude for learning and a talent for poetry, becoming one of the first published African poets in America.
