Answer
Kidnapped in present-day Senegal, West Africa, at around the age of seven, Phillis Wheatley was forcibly transported across the Atlantic Ocean to North America and sold into slavery in Boston in 1761. There, she was purchased by John Wheatley, a prominent Boston merchant, and his wife Susanna, who recognized and encouraged her remarkable poetic talents, leading her to become the first published African American poet.
