Phocas was a middle-ranking officer in the Roman army before he became Emperor. He was born in Thrace, in the eastern part of the Roman Empire, and he served in the army for many years. He rose through the ranks and eventually became a general. In 602, he led a revolt against the emperor Maurice, and he was successful in overthrowing him.
