Photios I lived and served in the 9th Century. He was a Byzantine scholar, diplomat, and politician who was Patriarch of Constantinople from 858 to 867 and again from 877 to 886. He was a major figure in the Byzantine Renaissance, and his writings on theology, philosophy, and literature are still studied today.
