What is the Photian schism?

  • A Political Revolution

  • A Military Coup

  • A Religious Deviation

  • A conflict in the church

Answer

The Photian schism was a conflict in the church in the 9th century. It began when Photius, the patriarch of Constantinople, was deposed by the Byzantine emperor Michael III in 867. Photius refused to accept his deposition and continued to claim the title of patriarch. This led to a split in the church between those who supported Photius and those who supported the new patriarch, Ignatius.
