Pierre-Auguste Renoir served in the Franco-Prussian War. He was drafted into the army in 1870 and fought in the Battle of Sedan, where the French were defeated. Renoir was taken prisoner and spent four months in a German prisoner-of-war camp. After being released, he returned to Paris and resumed his painting career.
