Pierre Charles L'Enfant was not only an architect, but also a military engineer. He was born in Paris, France, in 1754, and studied architecture at the Royal Academy of Architecture. He served in the French army during the American Revolutionary War, and after the war he moved to the United States. In 1791, he was appointed by President George Washington to design the city of Washington, D.C.
