Évariste Ndayishimiye succeeded Pierre Nkurunziza as the president of Burundi in May 2020. Nkurunziza had been in office since 2005 and was re-elected in 2015 in a controversial election that was boycotted by the opposition. Ndayishimiye is a member of the ruling party, the National Council for the Defence of Democracy-Forces for the Defence of Democracy (CNDD-FDD), and was previously the minister of defence.
