Stabiae was the site of Pliny the Elder's death. Pliny was a Roman author and naturalist who died during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. He was in command of the Roman fleet at Misenum when he received news of the eruption and sailed to investigate. Pliny and his crew landed at Stabiae, but they were soon forced to flee as the eruption intensified.
