In medieval legends, where was Pilate's supposed place of birth?

  • Particular locations in Western Europe

  • Jerusalem

  • Rome

  • Greece

Answer

Pilate's supposed place of birth has been attributed to several different locations in Western Europe throughout the Middle Ages. The most common of these is Vienne, France, where a church and shrine were built in his honor. Other places said to be his birthplace include Autun, France; Besançon, France; and Tournus, France. There is no historical evidence to support any of these claims, but they have persisted in popular legend.
