Answer
The Legate of Syria, Lucius Vitellius, removed Pontius Pilate from his office of prefect of Judea in AD 36. This was after Pilate had executed Jesus of Nazareth and caused a riot among the Jewish people. Vitellius was concerned about the political ramifications of Pilate's actions and decided to remove him from office. Pilate was then exiled to Gaul, where he died a few years later.
