Popeyes was originally named "Chicken on the Run" when it was founded in 1972. The name was changed to Popeyes after the founder, Al Copeland, decided to rebrand the restaurant to better reflect its New Orleans roots and the spicy, Louisiana-style fried chicken it serves.
