Porphyry was born in Tyre, a city in Phoenicia, a region in modern-day Lebanon. He was a Neoplatonic philosopher and a prolific writer on a wide range of subjects, including metaphysics, logic, ethics, and physics. He was also a student of Plotinus, the founder of Neoplatonism.
