Portia Simpson Miller served as Leader of the Opposition in Jamaica from 2007 to 2012 and again from 2016 to 2017. She was the first woman to hold this position, and she is also the first woman to have served as Prime Minister of Jamaica. Simpson Miller was born in 1944 in St. Catherine, Jamaica. She attended the University of the West Indies, where she studied social work.
