Amadeo I ascended to the Spanish throne in 1870. He was elected by the Cortes, the Spanish parliament, following the Glorious Revolution which had overthrown Queen Isabella II. He faced many challenges during his reign, including the ongoing Carlist Wars and the Cuban Ten Years' War. He eventually abdicated in 1873, and the First Spanish Republic was proclaimed.
