Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn served in the British Army for 40 years, from 1864 to 1904. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the 1st (Royal Scots) Regiment of Foot in 1864, and rose to the rank of lieutenant general in 1897.
