In 1862, Lee was promoted to the rank of field marshal. This was the highest rank in the Confederate States Army, and it was only held by three other men: Albert Sidney Johnston, P.G.T. Beauregard, and Joseph E. Johnston. Lee held this rank until the end of the Civil War.
