Prince George's service in the Royal Navy ended in 1934. George had joined the Navy in 1913 and served as a cadet on the battleship HMS Collingwood during the First World War. He was promoted to lieutenant in 1921 and served on a number of ships, including the battlecruiser HMS Repulse. In 1932, George was appointed second-in-command of the battleship HMS Rodney.
