Alice was a great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria. Victoria was the Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland from 1837 until her death in 1901. She was the longest-reigning British monarch and was known as the "grandmother of Europe" because of her many descendants who became monarchs of other European countries. Alice was born in 1843 and was the fifth child of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.
