French author Prosper Mérimée was born in Paris in 1803. He is best known for his novellas "Carmen" and "Colomba," which have been adapted into operas and films. Mérimée was also a historian and archaeologist, and he wrote extensively about Spanish culture and history. He died in Cannes in 1870.
